Halloween

Strolled down to the Castro this evening on Shawn's recommendation to check out the Halloween costume parade. There were mad amounts of people dressed up as all the Usual Suspects; from the firemen and police officers to creatures from Jabba's court to priests and [pregnant] nuns to the ubiquitous Marilyn Monroes and voluptuously bosomed nurses [all curiously blonde] popping-bountifully-outta-their white starched uniforms ...

Fave costume: an actual storm trooper stoically manning his curbside position.

Runner Up: A white guy in a full length orange and yellow Chinese speed skating bodysuit, doing a dance ... from afar looked like some kinda superhero breaking it down.

Poignantly Political: a pair of twin towers, PFC England and an Iraqi prisoner.

creative commons

It looks like some record companies [and artists] are taking the proverbial plunge (thus moving themselves into the RIAA's gun scope) and releasing material that can explicitly be sampled under one of a variety of the creative commons licenses.

They get props for realising that one size doesn't fit all and that they can do more to contribute to a healthier musical ecosystem.

medusa of hearts

On my way to adding-value this morning, decided to snap a coolpix of this florid mural of the Medusa. I walk by her every morning on 16th street, just west of Church in the Mission, most of the time too busy trying to not miss my train to really properly notice her.

The mural is an interesting cultural and artistic metissage of the typical associations to sovereign female wisdom, mother earth, death-rebirth, etc. On one hand there's the quasi-Oceanic style tattoo art of animals [primarily birds and snakes] scattered hieroglyphically above her bust and on her shoulders. Then there's the Virgin Mary in a prayerful pose on her nose crest and the recurring jade coloured skull-hand-heart motif. Unlike other Medusi/Meduserati/Meduserisimi [?] that I've seen in pictures and film, the serpents that form her cheveux are scaly rather than smooth. In fact because of that texture, I initially didn't see the serpents or her as a gorgon.

About a block further at the intersection of 16th and Dolores (on Dolores heading south) were a couple more voluptuous hearts, not unlike the ones I snapped a couple weeks ago at the Civic Center.

One clover-like heart was broken and the other was framed by the palm! ha!

Maurice Fulton

Had an eventful performance on with CLH on Saturday, the crowd was feeling the vibe, even though the place wasn't jammed pack full like in July, we did have 2 encores. On the flipside, the tediously long 3 hour soundcheck, peppered with lots of bad and fighting words and not-so-good karma between soundmen and bandmates, and my somewhat futile attempts to keep things moving smoothly, definitely coloured the experience.

There was also the fact that my role in the group, somewhat inconspicuously, in light of Dan's departure several weeks ago, and my overall absence in SF, was distinctly more passive, which I wasn't terribly pleased about. Nevertheless, it was a good occasion to get out in front of a crowd and do my thing .... so trankwil ...

So looks like there's a lot of brilliant music happening in Montréal now, next week one of my all time fave producers Maurice Fulton, will be in town ..arrgghh !! .. only to be followed by another top dog, Sasu Ripatti, in his Luomo guise ...yeah man, the programmation at the MEG this year is pretty good ....definitely not to be missed if those two can deliver!!!

check out A New Day by Maurice Fulton under the Ladyvipb moniker.

gnu-skool mix

While rummaging through picture books last weekend with the brotherman, came across this great picture of a gnu in mid-flight. For whatever reason, this picture and this gnu's present situation has particular resonance with me ....

Speaking of which, a gnu-skool techno blend has now been posted. It is a quick and dirty mix of stuff I'm feeling now and wanted to mix, a blend of recent and nearly recent (but not widely listened to) gems ... it is not beat-matched and sometimes wanders but the selection is solid and the mood consistent.
