medusa of hearts
On my way to adding-value this morning, decided to snap a coolpix of this florid mural of the Medusa. I walk by her every morning on 16th street, just west of Church in the Mission, most of the time too busy trying to not miss my train to really properly notice her. The mural is an interesting cultural and artistic metissage of the typical associations to sovereign female wisdom, mother earth, death-rebirth, etc. On one hand there's the quasi-Oceanic style tattoo art of animals [primarily birds and snakes] scattered hieroglyphically above her bust and on her shoulders. Then there's the Virgin Mary in a prayerful pose on her nose crest and the recurring jade coloured skull-hand-heart motif. Unlike other Medusi/Meduserati/Meduserisimi [?] that I've seen in pictures and film, the serpents that form her cheveux are scaly rather than smooth. In fact because of that texture, I initially didn't see the serpents or her as a gorgon. About a block further at the intersection of 16th and Dolores (on Dolores heading south) were a couple more voluptuous hearts, not unlike the ones I snapped a couple weeks ago at the Civic Center. One clover-like heart was broken and the other was framed by the palm! ha!
